New 16A SCR Switch Thyristor Improves Vehicle Charging Application Performance

As a global leader in circuit protection, Littelfuse today introduced a 16A SCR (Silicon Controlled Rectifier) series of switching thyristors designed for electric vehicle on-board charging (EVOBC) applications. The S8016xA series of SCR switching thyristors provide excellent AC processing and surge stability, enabling them to handle up to 16 ARMS of Class 1 charging at 120V, up to 16ARMS at 100°C and 240V, and up to 25ARMS at 80°C. Level 2 charging. The S8016xA family is the first SCR switching thyristor series capable of handling such high current levels. It is available in TO-220R and TO-263 packages, meets AEC-Q101 requirements, and supports the Production Part Approval Process (PPAP).

S8016xA Series SCR Thyristor

Typical applications for the S8016xA series of SCR switching thyristors are input rectification of AC line inputs for electric vehicle and off-board chargers.

"The S8016xA series of SCR switching thyristors are available in a compact TO-220R and TO-263 package, which helps circuit designers minimize the size of their charging circuits," said Koichiro Yoshimoto, Business Development Manager, Littelfuse product line. “Because AEC-Q101 compliant devices support PPAP, they are ideal for EVOBC applications.”

The S8016xA series of SCR switching thyristors have the following key advantages:

· The maximum repeating off-state voltage (VDRM) is 800V and can handle inputs up to 250VRMS AC power.

· RMS on current (IT(RMS)) up to 25A, making it ideal for Class 1 and Class 2 AC charging applications.

· The product has a peak non-repetitive blocking voltage (VDSM) of up to 1300V and a non-repetitive peak surge current (IPP) of 2400A, as appropriate for automotive grade metal oxide varistor (MOV) for AC overvoltage protection (eg The Littelfuse AUMOV® series is designed to withstand 6kV surges.

· It is AEC-Q101 compliant and supports PPAP (Production Part Approval Process), making it ideal for protecting Class 1 AC car chargers.
