Power Integrations Introduces Thyristor Dimming LYTSwitch-7 LED Driver IC to Reduce BOM Component Count by 40%

April 08, 2019

San Jose, California, July 19, 2016 hearing - high efficiency, high reliability LED driver IC industry leader in the field of Power IntegraTIons company (Nasdaq: POWI) today introduced a single-stage non-isolated buck suitable for LYTSwitchTM-7 IC product family for dimmable LED driver applications. Available in an ultra-thin SO-8 package, these devices deliver 22 W of output power without the need for a heat sink and are extremely efficient for use in bulbs, tubes and other lighting applications. In the design of the LYTSwitch-7, a simple passive attenuation circuit is required without the need for a bleeder circuit to meet the requirements of the thyristor dimmer. In addition, the inductors in the design can be made from commercially available standard inductors with only a single winding. The LYTSwitch-7 is designed to reduce the number of components to only 20. The design of a typical dimmable LED driver typically requires about 35 components.

The LYTSwitch-7 IC provides a phase-cut (thyristor) dimming solution with a wide dimming range and unidirectional dimming response. LED drivers achieve efficiencies of more than 86%, approximately 2% higher than traditional dimming products, and feature high power factor, precise regulation, and comprehensive protection. They are suitable for both low input voltage and high input voltage designs, as well as for a wide range of input designs in commercial lighting applications in the United States. These designs operate from 90 VAC to 305 VAC and require TRIAC dimming in low voltage applications.

Hubertus Notohamiprodjo, Director of Product Marketing, Power IntegraTIons, said: "Our latest LYTSwitch-7 LED driver ICs offer a rugged, high-reliability design that minimizes the number of BOM components and is approximately 40% less than conventional circuits. Built-in 725 V MOSFETs provide better withstand voltage during input surges, while non-bleeder circuits are designed to ensure that there is no excessive heat generation inside the driver when compatible with many TRIAC dimmers, so the design Drives are more efficient and reliable."

Like all Power IntegraTIons LED drivers, the LYTSwitch-7 IC offers a range of protection features, including thermal foldback protection that allows the drive to shut down immediately. In an abnormally high temperature environment, this feature automatically reduces the output current and darkens the LEDs, which protects the IC, the driver, and the entire fixture. Developers have found that thermal foldback features help reduce the electrical and mechanical costs of meeting reliability goals. Because the IC can automatically control the abnormal increase in temperature without the lamp being extinguished. The device also provides open circuit, short circuit, input and output overvoltage, overcurrent, and safe operating area (SOA) protection. The LYTSwitch-7 IC complies with several international standards: DOE Level 6 (external power supply), CEC TItles 20 and 24, ENERGY STAR® Version 2.0 Lamp Energy Efficiency Specification, NEMA SSL-7A, and EN61000-3-2 (C&D).

Key applications include low-cost A19 bulbs, small size bulbs (such as candle lights and GU10 bulbs), commercial and industrial applications, ceiling lamps and downlights. The LYTSwitch-7 IC sample is now available for ordering. The unit is priced at $0.33 each in 10,000-piece quantities. There are now two reference designs (DER-539 and DER-540) available for download from Power Integrations at https://.
